Review: NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream

NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream $5.99 at Ulta.

The short of it: There is a reason these are a cult favorite…they’re wonderful.

The claims: Straddles the line between lipstick and gloss, creamy, lustrous formula applies like silk, soft matte finish exudes a sensual glow, unique innovative texture.

The long of it: I have collected these a couple at a time over the course my love affair with Ulta, every time they have a 40% off NYX sale. I have played with more shades than the six in my collection, to find the colors that compliment my skin tone.

These smell like cupcakes and they feel as smooth as frosting on the lips, thick and creamy and so very very pretty. They aren’t a harsh, drying matte but something that looks a little bit softer.

They are easy to apply with the doe-foot applicator, and they reapply nicely. And you will need to reapply because these do not have the lasting power of a liquid lipstick. The mousse-y formula wears off on the inner rim of your lips after a few hours, and they definitely won’t survive your lunch. They can be a bit streaky sometimes, but another quick layer will solve any patchiness. Unfortunately this isn’t the sort of lip product that fades gracefully…these aren’t stains or super-long-lasting but once they dry, they don’t slide around your lips or migrate outside of your lip line and so when they wear off, they wear obviously.

I think the price tag, especially when they are 40% off, is more than fair for these opaque not-quite-a-lipstick not-quite-a-lip-gloss tubes of merriment and joy.

Cannes is my favorite color of the bunch, described as a “dusty muted mauve.”
